The Music Industry and Rebecca Black

While Rebecca Black’s song “Friday” was met with confusion, dismay, ridicule, enthusiasm and obsession, the music video already has 36 million views on YouTube and has gone completely viral. Rolling Stone writes that the vocals have “a peculiar tonality that inadvertently highlights the absurdity of boilerplate pop lyrics,” and adds that the sound is “unlike anything else in pop music.”
The question is, is that a good thing?
